His practice begins with physical objects.
Each sculpture is conceived, formed and finished as an individual work, but it does not exist in isolation. Every piece belongs to a larger chronology — a moment in the life of a character, a fragment of memory, or a stage within a universe that is intended to continue developing over many years.
At the center of this universe is The Young King.
Born from an egg and entering the human world without knowing his true origin, the Young King grows through childhood, discovery, companionship, loss, knowledge and transformation.
His story is not conceived as a conventional illustrated narrative.
It is built through artworks.
A sculpture may preserve a childhood moment.
A drawing may record an early encounter.
A flower may belong to one particular season.
A companion may appear only after a certain journey has taken place.
For Vo Anh Tuan, these distinctions matter because time itself is part of the work.
Sculpture as Memory
One of the central ideas within The Young King Universe is simple:
Stories may return. Characters may return. Moments never return.
A character can appear many times throughout a lifetime, but the exact moment represented by an artwork belongs only to that point in the chronology.
This principle shapes both the artistic structure of the universe and the way individual works are created.
The sculptures of The Young King Universe are therefore conceived as unique works rather than endlessly repeatable objects.
Each artwork preserves one moment.
Once that moment has passed, the universe continues forward.
Building a World Through Objects
Vo Anh Tuan's work combines sculpture with elements of design, drawing, digital modelling, documentation and world-building.
Rather than separating these disciplines, he uses them to construct different layers of the same artistic universe.
Physical sculpture remains the foundation.
Around it, other structures gradually expand the context of the work: written chronicles, archival documents, digital exhibitions and environments that allow the history of the universe to remain accessible as it develops.
The intention is not simply to present a collection of sculptures.
It is to allow viewers to encounter a world whose history accumulates over time.
The Beginning: Genesis
The earliest chapter of The Young King Universe begins with Genesis Core.
It establishes the origin of the Young King through three fundamental states:
Origin Egg
the sealed beginning.
Fracture of Origin
the moment the protected world opens.
Primal Form
the first physical emergence of the character.
These works form the deepest historical layer of the universe.
Everything that follows grows from this origin.
Childhood and The First Flower
After Genesis, the universe enters a very different period.
The monumental question of origin gives way to childhood.
The First Flower follows the Young King through twelve works arranged across four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
The flowers that appear during this chapter are intentionally simple.
They are not botanical studies.
They belong to the visual language of a child discovering the world.
Across the twelve works, small changes in colour, drawing, material and form begin to record the passage of time.
What appears simple on the surface becomes a chronology.
A Universe Designed to Grow
The Young King Universe is conceived as a long-term artistic project.
The Young King will grow.
New characters will enter his life.
Different places, disciplines, relationships and experiences will gradually become part of the work.
Some characters may remain for many years. Others may appear only during a particular stage.
The artistic language itself may evolve as the character becomes older.
The universe therefore does not begin with a predetermined catalogue of independent objects.
It begins with a life.
The artworks emerge from that life.
The Artist Behind the Universe
Vo Anh Tuan works independently across the different stages of his practice, from the development of characters and sculpture to finishing, visual documentation and the construction of the wider universe surrounding the physical works.
This independence has allowed The Young King Universe to develop according to its own internal logic.
Its chronology, symbols and characters are not created as decorative additions to individual sculptures.
They form a coherent system.
A butterfly can become a guide.
A raven can become a teacher.
A wolf can enter the story as a companion.
A mark on the body of the Young King can preserve the memory of an event.
Each element must have a reason to exist.
An Ongoing Work
The Young King Universe is still being built.
Its current works represent only the beginning of a much longer chronology.
Some parts already exist physically.
Others are being documented, exhibited digitally or developed for future chapters.
For Vo Anh Tuan, this gradual construction is essential.
The universe is not intended to appear complete from the beginning.
It must accumulate history.
Artwork by artwork.
Season by season.
Moment by moment.
Because stories may return.
Characters may return.
But moments never return.
