The origin of The Young King Universe by Vietnamese artist Vo Anh Tuan
Before there was a Young King, there was an egg.
Black, closed and silent, it carried no visible crown, no kingdom and no explanation of what might come after it.
It was simply there.
And that was enough to begin.
The Young King Universe is a long-term artistic project created by Vietnamese artist Vo Anh Tuan. It develops through sculpture, drawing, narrative, documentation and digital environments, but its origin is deliberately simple: a single object containing the possibility of a world that had not yet revealed itself.
That object became Genesis Core I — Origin Egg.
Before the story
Most stories begin when something happens.
The Young King Universe begins slightly earlier.
It begins before the character knows who he is, before the journey has a direction, before the world around him has acquired meaning.
The Origin Egg represents that condition.
Its exterior is made of steel and painted black. Inside, its shell carries a composite and stone-powder layer. The contrast between exterior and interior is physical, but it also establishes an idea that will return throughout The Young King Universe: what can be seen from the outside is not necessarily what is held within.
At this point, there is no need to explain everything.
Origin does not arrive with an instruction.
It exists before understanding.
The Genesis Core
The beginning of The Young King Universe is formed by three sculptures:
Genesis Core I — Origin Egg
Genesis Core II — Fracture of Origin
Genesis Core III — Primal Form
Together they form the Genesis Core, the first material chapter of the Universe.
The first work contains.
The second breaks.
The third reveals.
This sequence establishes more than chronology. It establishes the basic movement of the Universe itself: from origin, through rupture, toward existence.
The Young King does not enter the world already knowing his identity.
He arrives before understanding it.
That distinction matters.
He is not introduced as a ruler standing above others. He enters as a child who must encounter the world gradually — through curiosity, attachment, joy, uncertainty, failure, memory and time.
His origin exists before his awareness of it.
And because of that, Genesis remains present even when the story moves forward.
A child enters the world
After Genesis, the Universe changes in scale.
The monumental question of origin gives way to something much smaller.
A flower.
This becomes The First Flower, the chapter in which the Young King begins to experience the human world through the directness of childhood.
The drawings that appear on the sculptures are made with wax crayon. Their lines are intentionally simple. They are not polished into conventional decorative painting.
Some marks are uneven.
Some flowers are carefully colored.
Others may stop before they are complete.
The point is not to imitate childhood as a visual style.
The point is to preserve something more difficult: the way a child can act before explaining the action.
A child may draw because he wants to draw.
He may stop because the moment has already moved somewhere else.
Only later does memory give that moment weight.
The Butterfly
A Butterfly appears during these early encounters.
It does not arrive to explain the world to the Young King.
It does not speak for him.
It stays near.
Within The Young King Universe, the Butterfly becomes one of the earliest presences beside the King — a quiet companion through moments of discovery.
This relationship is important because the Universe is not built around constant explanation.
Some things are learned through being near them.
Some things are remembered before they are understood.
Why begin here?
The Young King Universe is intended to unfold over many years.
New sculptures will appear.
The King will grow.
New places, relationships and experiences will become part of his life.
But the beginning must remain identifiable.
That is why the Genesis Core matters.
It gives the Universe a physical origin.
And that is why the Origin Egg matters.
Long before the Museum, before later chapters, before the growing archive surrounding the work, there was a black object containing no visible answer.
Everything else came afterward.
A universe that grows slowly
The Young King Universe is not intended to reveal itself all at once.
Its chronology grows with the artworks themselves.
Each completed sculpture becomes both an individual work and a record of a particular moment within a larger life.
The story may continue.
Characters may return.
Symbols may appear again.
But a moment, once lived, belongs to its own place in time.
For this reason, the project is being built slowly.
Not to fill a universe as quickly as possible, but to allow one to accumulate.
One sculpture.
One memory.
One encounter at a time.
And at the beginning of all of them was an egg.

Stories may return. Characters may return. Moments never return.
This Journal begins here because every written memory that follows must remain connected to its first source.
